33rd Annual Conference of the Nigerian Association of Social Workers

The 33rd Annual Conference of the Nigerian Association of Social Workers will take place on the following days:

Arrival: 6th, and Departure: 10th of November, respectively.

In March 2015 NASOW FCT launched a volunteer group as part of its activities to mark the world social work day. Organising a standing volunteer group became necessary due to the increasing rate of social problems and the scarcity of resources both human and material required to intervene in solving the problems.

NASOW thumbs-up NASS on torture bill

National Association of Social Workers (NASOW) has commended the House of Representatives for being able to approve a report on a bill that makes torture and all forms of inhuman treatment in public places and homes in the country a criminal act.

According to NASOW’s Secretary General, Mallam Jamilu Musa who spoke on phone from his Kano base, “NASOW thinks sincerely that the House of Representatives have done well in this instance making the bill which makes torture in any form in the offices, police cells and homes now offences punishable by law.”

Social Exclusion and Inequality In Nigeria

The level of social exclusion and inequality in Nigeria is increasing at an astronomical rate perhaps at one of the fastest growing rate in the world. Government seems to show some interest in social welfare delivery services by establishing such institutions as Ministries at the Federal, State and Local Government levels namely, Ministries of Women Affairs, Youth, Child, and Community Development etc. Regrettably, this demonstration of political commitment is not achieving the desired goals owing to these factors; low level of professionalism, lack of enabling laws, poor policy framework, poor understanding of the nature scope and dynamics of social welfare systems.

I watched with interest as our president, Mohammadu Buhari attended the conference of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) where he solicited their technical support for his fight on corruption .He made a similar move with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN). And i thought, if social work practice is properly positioned in the scheme of things, the president would have solicited the collaboration of social workers for his second cardinal agenda which is establishment of social welfare programmes in Nigeria.
